STARTING LINE
Seeing through the lie that the Church has replaced Israel will not make us any more saved, but it can greatly change the way we work out our salvation (Philippians 2:12).
As soon as we realise we've been misled about something, possibly by not having had the whole truth, we see it differently and we can make sense of it in a way we did not do before. Possibly changing our attitude and our actions, whilst wondering how we could have been so taken in. And maybe having to make some apologies!
Which is what happens when we begin to see through the lie that the Church has replaced Israel. Realising God hasn't changed His mind about Israel being His forever channel of His salvation; understanding how He sent His fully Jewish Son to be their Messiah so they could fulfil their calling to be "a light to the nations" (Isaiah 49:6), and discovering that the Bible was written almost entirely by Jewish writers for a Jewish audience, or for those who put their trust in the Jewish Jesus.
"Jesus declared ... salvation is from the Jews." (John 4:22)
Whilst this can be quite a paradigm shift for our Gentile minds, it then enables us to appreciate God's Word as never before, to take us beyond a faith centred on 'what Jesus did for me' into the outworking of His final purposes when everything will be united in Him (Ephesians 1:9-10).
"He has made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of His will, according to His purpose which He set forth in Christ as a plan for the fulness of time, to unite all things in Him, things in heaven and things on earth." ( Ephesians 1:9-10)
From which to see the overview of God's purposes through Israel, that challenges us to love its people the way He loves them. Also making us more aware of the sin of the Church when it claims it's replaced Israel, and avoids all reference to God's ongoing purposes through the Jewish people. And that anti-Semitism is an abhorrence, particularly if it comes from those who claim to love the One who is actually the Jewish Messiah.
"I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's house, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly towards You. Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, but if you return to Me and obey my commands, then even if you are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there, and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name." (Nehemiah 1:6-9)
This may then prompt us to recognise, in Nehemiah's style, the sins of those past and present who had, or have, no sense of being 'grafted-in' branches (Nehemiah 1:6 & Romans 11:17). Also to repent for our any blindness on our own part, and for any words and deeds that dishonoured God's irrevocable calling of Israel (Romans 11:29).
Then to a change of attitude towards Israel, and to actions that reflect this (Romans 12:2) as we recognise
the Jewish context of the Christian faith (Romans 9-11) that comes from
the privilege of Gentile believers to be
the significance of Israel's return to the land confirming
our calling to
the need to
This may well challenge us about relating to churches that, if only by default, are under the lie of Replacement Theology, and about how to share in practice the truth of God's ongoing purposes through Israel with others, especially with pastors.
"I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:2-3)
However, if we rise to it we'll have God's blessing of Abraham to bless others with (Genesis 12:3). We will have a firmer foundation to stand on in the face of the shaking that's most likely to come soon. And we'll have a greater potential to light up the darkness in the face of the deception and the end-time falling away that Jesus prophesied (Matthew 24: 10 & 24).
FINISHING LINE
Knowing we're 'grafted into' God's ongoing purposes through Israel gives a distinctive opportunity for Him to work in us "to will and to act according to His good purpose" (Philippians 2:13).
Which is absolutely crucial in the present times, let alone in the times that may soon be upon us.
